Chapter 10

Al Hemmer was, like most of us, at a loss for details on such a horrific crime. The only true information that I’d gotten out of him was that they had gone over Jason’s house a few times and came up with nothing.

No one broke into the house, which told me Jason knew them. Nothing was stolen or appeared to be disheveled, which also told me the killer was there and knew him. And that Jason was killed outside while he was doing yard work. The weapon of choice, a shovel to the head, which was left at the crime scene between the garage and the house.

This told me that there was probably a fight or scuffle before the killer picked up the weapon and hit him on the side of his head near the temple, but from where the report says he was hit, it would seem to me that Jason had been facing away from the killer then turned just as the killer was going to hit him from behind.

There were no prints on the weapon.

Al didn’t know about the note or at least he’d not mentioned it. He did say that Tucker had been going out and following up on leads, and they’d be meeting this afternoon. That’s when I knew I’d leave it to Tucker to update Al on what we’d found out at the flower shop.

I’d yet to hear if there were any prints found on the notes, so maybe that would give us some clues.

Still, I wanted to go see Ted, Jason’s hunting partner, and feel out what he thought about Jason and kinda see where he stood with Jenn, Jason’s mother.

“I was sweating.” Bobby Ray was pacing in front of his truck on the back side of the Milkery where the screen door was open. No doubt Mary Elizabeth had it opened for us. “I was thinkin’ you stood me up.”

“Would I ever do that?” I questioned such a goofy observation.

“I didn’t think so, but you’re also never late.” He looked down at me. “Let me guess, Jason Dresser.”

“Good guess.” I wiggled my brows.

“Abby got up bright and early this morning to go to work to do some research for y’all’s case.” He smiled. “I think it’s cute how you gals like to act like that snoopy lady on the old television show Mary Elizabeth used to watch when we were growing up.”

“And we are pretty good at it.” I slipped my hand in his arm. “Are you ready to go see Mary Elizabeth?”

“No better time than now.” He took the first step forward to lead the way.

The smell of fried cornbread, fried okra, and a mix of sugar floated out the screen door.

“Knock, knock.” I announced our arrival. We heard the oven door slam, followed up by creaking of the old wood floor before Mary Elizabeth popped her head at the screen door.

“I hope you two brought an empty stomach. I made your favorites.” She pushed open the door with her elbow, the homemade oven macaroni and cheese dish in her hands.
